Plastic Pollution Challenge

Blue Ocean Plastic Recycling is implementing a tourism-centric waste management solution in Koh Samui, Thailand, by enhancing its network of waste banks and integrating the tourism sector into waste management efforts. In the next six months, the company aims to successfully implement a new waste bank model that actively engages tourists and encourages local community participation. This will involve renovating three waste banks and creating a digital platform where tourists can earn loyalty points by collecting plastic waste, redeemable for tourism activities. The initiative will also hire and train local youth as guides to educate tourists and locals about effective waste management practices. The program is expected to deliver tangible environmental benefits by preventing waste leakage into the ocean and fostering a cleaner Samui while promoting education on waste separation and recycling. Over the next two years, Blue Ocean Plastic Recycling envisions expanding its waste bank network to different islands and developing a technology-centric waste station center driven by digital technologies and AI. This automation will enable users to sort plastic types, weigh waste, and calculate points automatically, reducing reliance on manpower. Trained youth guides will lead community efforts towards environmental commitments and strengthen collaborations with the tourism sector on various sustainability initiatives. Through this comprehensive approach, Blue Ocean Plastic Recycling aims to create a more sustainable tourism industry by bridging the gap between local waste management efforts and tourist participation, fostering a cleaner, more environmentally conscious Koh Samui.
