Plastic Pollution Challenge

Greenchar addresses the pressing issue of agricultural waste management in ASEAN by converting biomass residues into biochar, a product that improves soil quality, reduces CO2 emissions, and mitigates air pollution. The project trains farmers in sustainable biochar production, enabling them to access and sell carbon credits, potentially increasing their income. Greenchar is also developing a technology platform to provide farmers with best practices for biochar production, simplify the carbon credit certification process, and streamline data collection. ABIC funding will support the development of this platform, selection of partner farmers, deployment of biochar production technology, training sessions, and carbon credit certification efforts. In the next six months, Greenchar will issue carbon credits from a Malaysian partner farm using its Measurement, Reporting, Verification (MRV) software to track biochar production, ensuring compliance with carbon credit protocols and demonstrating scalability across other ASEAN farms. Within two years, Greenchar aims to scale up its MRV platform across multiple ASEAN countries, expanding partnerships in Malaysia, Indonesia, and beyond. This will facilitate carbon sequestration, promote soil restoration, and establish biochar production as a key solution within the blue economy, contributing to climate resilience and sustainable agriculture across the region.
