Local Alike

Local Alike is pioneering a community-based regenerative tourism model in the Koh Klang Community, Krabi Province, Thailand, marking the first initiative of its kind in the country. This project addresses critical issues such as overfishing and waste management challenges faced by the island. Over the next six months, the focus will be on establishing a regenerative tourism model that enhances waste management systems and promotes mangrove restoration, all funded through tourism revenue. Key activities will include developing an aquatic animal hatchery, promoting conservation initiatives, and implementing sustainable waste management practices. By integrating these efforts into tourism activities, Local Alike aims to create a community-driven model that not only preserves the environment but also provides alternative income sources for villagers through eco-tourism. In the two-year vision, Local Alike plans to expand this model to at least three out of the 56 islands in Thailand, fostering a broader culture of sustainability and conservation. The ABIC funding will support essential components of this initiative, including community engagements, the design of training curricula, and workshops focused on waste management and aquatic animal conservation. Additionally, the funding will facilitate the launch and evaluation of the Regenerative Island Tour program, to accelerate the learning and potential scale-up efforts.
