NETIL Timor-Leste’s project focuses on the restoration and conservation of mangroves in Ulmeara Village, Liquica District, aiming to integrate these efforts into the blue carbon market. It will enhance an existing mangrove nursery, plant more mangrove seedlings, and engage with the community. It also explores the feasibility of blue carbon issuance in the future. This approach addresses both climate change and economic development by leveraging blue carbon farming to provide additional income for local communities while promoting environmental sustainability. ABIC funding will be used to expand mangrove nurseries, rehabilitate the targeted areas, and promote livelihoods through workshops and partnerships with investors. In the next six months, NETIL plans to plant 10,000 mangrove seedlings in 5 hectares, engage with 100 households, build fences to protect the mangrove area, and raise community awareness. Additionally, the team will develop a draft MoU with potential investors for blue carbon farming. Over the next two years, NETIL aims to secure investment for 16 hectares and 32,000 mangroves, certified under the leading accrediting organizations, with benefit sharing for landowners, investors, and the government in line with TimorLeste’s carbon farming policies.
