Plastic Pollution Challenge
The OBX team presents Project SCALES, an innovative solution designed to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing while enhancing emergency response in coastal communities. This initiative integrates a mobile app, vessel monitoring tracker, and a centralized fishery law command system to enable real-time reporting and monitoring. With features like offline access, GPS tracking, and privacy safeguards, the platform empowers fishermen in corruption-prone areas to report illegal activities without fear. Additionally, the system links to local government emergency units to ensure rapid response. Project SCALES not only addresses illegal fishing but also aids in ocean conservation and protecting local livelihoods. ABIC funding will support the pilot implementation, data system development, and community stakeholder engagement. In the next six months, OBX will focus on deploying the system in pilot areas, ensuring operational success and active community engagement. In two years, the project aims to expand across multiple regions in the Philippines, institutionalizing the system with strong government partnerships, reducing illegal fishing, and securing long-term sustainability.
