OWSD Myanmar National Chapter

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Myanmar National Chapter offers a low-cost water purification system using rice husks as a biochar material to improve water quality in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Delta. This innovative approach addresses the lack of access to safe drinking water, especially in rural areas where traditional filtration is insufficient. Utilizing locally sourced rice husks provides an affordable and sustainable solution to remove pollutants from water, reduce waterborne diseases, and improve public health. The ABIC funding will support community engagement, awareness campaigns, and designing, testing, and implementing 100 water purification systems across two townships. In the next six months, OWSD aims to establish a pilot system that demonstrates an innovative and sustainable solution for providing safe drinking water to vulnerable communities in the Ayeyarwady Delta. Within two years, the project envisions expanding the reach of these low-cost water purification systems to additional communities, enhancing public health and access to clean water across the region.
