Plastic Pollution Challenge

Print Squares is tackling Vientiane’s growing plastic waste problem by transforming single-use Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles into 3D printing filament. This circular economy initiative addresses environmental challenges and creates sustainable products for the 3D printing industry. With plans to scale operations to process up to one ton of PET plastic per month, Print Squares will convert waste into filament for construction materials, machinery parts, and other products, providing economic opportunities for local communities. The ABIC funding will support equipment acquisition, production testing, and the development of a delivery network for these innovative products. In the next six months, Print Squares will expand its capacity to process PET bottles into 3D printing filaments, reaching up to 50kg of monthly production. The project will also focus on prototyping a prosthetic device, working closely with organizations supporting the victims of unexploded ordnance to meet user requirements. Over the next two years, Print Squares aims to develop further the use of PET waste in prosthetic devices, construction materials, and water filtration systems while scaling production to handle up to 1,000kg of recycled filament per month and forming partnerships with local businesses to promote second-life products from PET waste.
