Plastic Pollution Challenge

Udayana University’s innovation focuses on using bacillus species to mitigate Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) in Pacific White Shrimp farming, providing an alternative to antibiotics. Incorporating bacillus into shrimp feed leverages its natural antimicrobial properties to combat vibrio pathogens, which are responsible for AHPND, a leading cause of shrimp mortality. This solution aims to reduce disease outbreaks, improve shrimp pond health, and boost production and economic outcomes. ABIC funding will support shrimp farm setup, bacillus strain procurement, personnel training, treatment application, and ongoing monitoring to ensure scalability and sustainability within Indonesia’s aquaculture industry. In the next six months, Udayana University will focus on deploying bacillus-based treatments at selected shrimp farms, conducting field trials, and monitoring shrimp health to showcase the effectiveness of this innovation. Within the next two years, the aim is to expand this method across Indonesia’s aquaculture sector, establishing bacillus treatments as a scalable, sustainable solution for enhancing shrimp production and reducing disease-related losses.
