Plastic Pollution Challenge
UniFAHS is implementing an innovative solution to tackle Vibrio infections in aquaculture through phage therapy, offering a sustainable alternative to antibiotics. Vibrio infections are a leading cause of high mortality rates and economic losses in shrimp farming. UniFAHS’ solution involves developing a Vibrio phage cocktail that can be mixed with animal feed to combat bacterial infections. This approach addresses antibiotic resistance and fosters healthier aquaculture ecosystems, reducing Vibrio-related diseases, decreasing antibiotic reliance, and improving overall productivity. ABIC funding will support the development and optimization of the phage cocktail, including sample collection, formulation refinement, and dose determination, as well as its implementation and effectiveness monitoring across various shrimp farming stages. In the next six months, UniFAHS will develop at least one potential Vibrio phage cocktail formulation and focus on educating Thai shrimp farmers about the overuse of antibiotics and the benefits of phage therapy, aiming to reduce economic losses. Within two years, UniFAHS envisions reducing pathogenic Vibrio bacteria and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by over 80% in shrimp farms across Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, establishing phage therapy as a key solution for sustainable aquaculture.
