Plastic Pollution Challenge

UTeM’s innovation focuses on developing a zero-exchange water filtration system using bio down-flow hanging sponge (bio-DHS) technology integrated with IoT for fish farming. This system addresses ammonia buildup in fish farms, which can harm aquatic life and require frequent water exchanges. The bio-DHS filter uses nitrifying bacteria to convert ammonia into harmless nitrates, ensuring continuous water quality without needing water replacement. IoT technology enables real-time monitoring and management of water conditions, promoting sustainable fisheries with reduced environmental impact. ABIC funding will support system design, IoT integration, feasibility studies, and data analysis. In the next six months, UTeM will launch a pilot project to implement a small-scale zero-exchange system at a selected fish farm, using bioDHS filters and IoT to optimize water quality and fish health. In two years, UTeM envisions scaling the system across multiple ASEAN countries, with over 3,000 seafood farmers benefiting from the high-tech platform for real-time monitoring. This innovation will increase profitability, improve food security, and serve as a model for sustainable aquaculture, promoting both ecological balance and economic resilience in the region.
