SEAFILM aims to combat microplastic pollution with an innovative filtration system that uses seaweed extract as a natural filtration medium for household washing machines. By capturing harmful microfibers before they enter water systems, SEAFILM leverages the biodegradable properties of seaweed polysaccharides to offer an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic filters. This scalable solution can potentially significantly reduce microplastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems. ABIC funding will support the design, development, and testing of SEAFILM prototypes, community education initiatives, and feedback collection. In the next six months, SEAFILM will focus on expanding its product to microplastic pollution hotspots in Southeast Asia, scaling up the system for greater sustainability. Within two years, SEAFILM aims to complete a fully functional prototype for washing machine filters, contributing to both reducing microplastic pollution and raising public awareness about its environmental impact.
